Strategic Plan 2000-2002
Mission Statement
The maximum empowerment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and communities in the greater Auckland region in accordance with Te Tiriti O Waitangi
The year ahead: 2000
- Establish agreement with members at Special General Meeting (jan 19) over important issues (to be voted on at Annual General Meeting in June)
- Direction of PRIDE :
- Do we continue or close it down? Is it really worth the effort?
- Are we justifying the money we receive as grants?
- Is it understood that if we slip further in future we will be taking money under fraudulent conditions?
- If We make the commitment to continue certain things should be explored.
- Status Change from Trust to incorporated society:
A change from being a Trust to being an Incorporated Society could have advantages.
- People may be more willing to be board members.
- It will not affect our funding grants status.
- It may be easier to administrate.
- We can close down the Trust and bequeath everything to the society, thus severing links with the past history of the Pride Centre by starting again as a NEW organisation with a new name.
- New premises:
It is very important that Auckland PRIDE be visible, we need to be better situated so we can be utilised as a community centre. A move towards being open on Saturdays and Sundays should happen. Increasing the sales of LGBT items should be looked at seriously books, magazines, as well as Rainbow flags; not just because of the extra revenue but also to encourage the Auckland LGBT communities to get into the habit of frequenting our premises. A shop (thus being Wheelchair accessible), would be best. Possibilities; Ponsonby Road, Karangahape Road, Surrey Crescent etc. This should be a top priority for this year.
- Promotion
- There will be more promotion of PRIDE and its services; regular advertisements in Truth, The Central Leader, etc. to reach those who have not come out.
- There will be more encouragement of people to become involved as volunteers and Board members.
- A Membership Drive will be undertaken.
- Events 2000
- February - PRIDE Auckland will have a stall at HERO’s Big Gay Out
- June - World PRIDE Roma 2000: This will be held in Rome. As a member of InterPRIDE, we can send an official representative. But anyone can attend the events. We will be expected to issue press releases if necessary.
- July - PRIDE Auckland will organise a mid-winter event: including a new Art exhibition Wintersun, an indoor charity Bazaar and, on July 15th, a celebration to mark Law Reform Day
- September - SPRING! Art exhibition will open Sept 1.
- October - InterPRIDE Conference 2000: Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. As a member of InterPRIDE we should be represented at this event.
- November - Coming OUT Day 2000: PRIDE Auckland must have a successful Coming OUT Day this year :a parade would be a very good idea.
- Organisation
- It is vitally important that PRIDEAuckland focus on its core roles:
- Information: we provide information about LGBT Auckland
- Facilitation: our resources help LGBT Groups to set up/operate
- Advocacy: We are a voice for the LGBT community
- Events: we promote community cohesion and well-being
- To enable us to perform our duties:
- the information data base must be brought up to date.
- the Mediawatch group must be made to work!
- the Community FORUM should be fostered.
- the WEBsite must be updated and expanded (links to other sites etc).
- the Newsletter must be improved (and eventually made monthly again)
- This requires reactivation of the various committees which will be a major priority for this year.
- Finance Committee - 3 members:
Takes care of the banking, tax, GST and grants applications.
- Management Committee - 3 members:
Takes care of employment issues, fund-raising, merchandise and promotion.
- Media Committee - 4 members:
Organises MediaWatch and the Community FORUM, etc.
- Events Committee - 4 members:
Organises events: Coming OUT Day, PRIDE Stories, Art exhibitions, etc.
- The co-ordinator would probably (but not necessarily) be a member of one or more of these committees.
- These committees must be working fairly substantially by the end of 2000, otherwise the feasibility of this organisation will be seriously in doubt.
- Employment
- By the middle of this year (2000) the management committee will produce an employment contract and job description for the position of co-ordinator.
- Steps will be taken to employ an administrative assistant.
- Appropriate and professional training for the volunteers will be explored.
On to 2001...
