Supporting Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay & Transgender Communities

Venue

Strategic Plan 2000-2002

Mission Statement
The maximum empowerment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and communities in the greater Auckland region in accordance with Te Tiriti O Waitangi

The year ahead: 2000

  1. Establish agreement with members at Special General Meeting (jan 19) over important issues (to be voted on at Annual General Meeting in June)
    1. Direction of PRIDE :
      1. Do we continue or close it down? Is it really worth the effort?
      2. Are we justifying the money we receive as grants?
      3. Is it understood that if we slip further in future we will be taking money under fraudulent conditions?
      4. If We make the commitment to continue certain things should be explored.
    2. Status Change from Trust to incorporated society:
A change from being a Trust to being an Incorporated Society could have advantages.
      1. People may be more willing to be board members.
      2. It will not affect our funding grants status.
      3. It may be easier to administrate.
      4. We can close down the Trust and bequeath everything to the society, thus severing links with the past history of the Pride Centre by starting again as a NEW organisation with a new name.
    3. New premises:
It is very important that Auckland PRIDE be visible, we need to be better situated so we can be utilised as a community centre. A move towards being open on Saturdays and Sundays should happen. Increasing the sales of LGBT items should be looked at seriously books, magazines, as well as Rainbow flags; not just because of the extra revenue but also to encourage the Auckland LGBT communities to get into the habit of frequenting our premises. A shop (thus being Wheelchair accessible), would be best. Possibilities; Ponsonby Road, Karangahape Road, Surrey Crescent etc. This should be a top priority for this year.
  2. Promotion
    1. There will be more promotion of PRIDE and its services; regular advertisements in Truth, The Central Leader, etc. to reach those who have not come out.
    2. There will be more encouragement of people to become involved as volunteers and Board members.
    3. A Membership Drive will be undertaken.
  3. Events 2000
    1. February - PRIDE Auckland will have a stall at HERO’s Big Gay Out
    2. June - World PRIDE Roma 2000: This will be held in Rome. As a member of InterPRIDE, we can send an official representative. But anyone can attend the events. We will be expected to issue press releases if necessary.
    3. July - PRIDE Auckland will organise a mid-winter event: including a new Art exhibition Wintersun, an indoor charity Bazaar and, on July 15th, a celebration to mark Law Reform Day
    4. September - SPRING! Art exhibition will open Sept 1.
    5. October - InterPRIDE Conference 2000: Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. As a member of InterPRIDE we should be represented at this event.
    6. November - Coming OUT Day 2000: PRIDE Auckland must have a successful Coming OUT Day this year :a parade would be a very good idea.
  4. Organisation
    1. It is vitally important that PRIDEAuckland focus on its core roles:
      1. Information: we provide information about LGBT Auckland
      2. Facilitation: our resources help LGBT Groups to set up/operate
      3. Advocacy: We are a voice for the LGBT community
      4. Events: we promote community cohesion and well-being
    2. To enable us to perform our duties:
      1. the information data base must be brought up to date.
      2. the Mediawatch group must be made to work!
      3. the Community FORUM should be fostered.
      4. the WEBsite must be updated and expanded (links to other sites etc).
      5. the Newsletter must be improved (and eventually made monthly again)
    3. This requires reactivation of the various committees which will be a major priority for this year.
      1. Finance Committee - 3 members:
Takes care of the banking, tax, GST and grants applications.
      2. Management Committee - 3 members:
Takes care of employment issues, fund-raising, merchandise and promotion.
      3. Media Committee - 4 members:
Organises MediaWatch and the Community FORUM, etc.
      4. Events Committee - 4 members:
Organises events: Coming OUT Day, PRIDE Stories, Art exhibitions, etc.
      5. The co-ordinator would probably (but not necessarily) be a member of one or more of these committees.
      6. These committees must be working fairly substantially by the end of 2000, otherwise the feasibility of this organisation will be seriously in doubt.
  5. Employment
    1. By the middle of this year (2000) the management committee will produce an employment contract and job description for the position of co-ordinator.
    2. Steps will be taken to employ an administrative assistant.
    3. Appropriate and professional training for the volunteers will be explored.
